Title: 2013 Alberta Challenge, October 5,6 & 19,20
Post by: jacek on July 28, 2013, 05:57:00 PM
DEAR TRIAL RIDERS:

We would like to invite all Trials riders to participate in an Alberta Provincial Championship.
The main idea behind this Championship is to bring people together, similar to the Olympic Spirit.

This Championship will be a series of two day challenges of modern trial bikes (Round 1&2 October 5 , 6 in Red Deer, and two weeks later, October Round 3&4 on October 19, 20 in Airdrie.) The first day we will ride 9-10 different sections. On the second day we will ride them backwards.

Proposed classes are: Expert, Advanced, Intermediate, Novice (sub-groups Seniors advance 45 with intermediate line) We would like to keep this as simple as possible. (If you have any other ideas, please let us know.)

James K. from Precision Prosthetic, Red Deer will be donating some money for trophies (we have not established what they will be - any ideas?)  Maybe something which will symbolize united Alberta?

I have also talked with Steve Ford  and made a proposal to donate all of our collected money from entry fees to some charity organization. I would like to propose to donate them to a Flood Relief organization. Does anyone know of a good and legitimate one? For example: Canadian Red Cross or, any other organization/charity (e.g. Orphans , MS, cancer and so on… )  Steve F. will do the same with money from the Airdrie entry fees.

We were thinking of an entry fee of $30 dollars per day. Please let us know whether this is an acceptable amount or not.   I will only need to pay for portable toilet/s.

Camping area will cost around $25 per night or parking for a day $10-15.  We will have a campground on Canyon Ski Resort terrain-  We are hoping that we will be able to convince the Canyon Ski Resort owner of not charging us at all.

The area for riding is generously provided by generous Jim Bower.

I will set up an additional transparent jar for donations.  Entry fee for spectators will be $0 dollars but I will mention about our idea of a donation jar. All money will be counted at the end of each day and announced during the results presentations. We can donate them anonymously. Please propose any other ideas of how to do it properly.

Please feel free to put any positive input and, obviously, work into this championship. We need your help- for sure!
Without you, guys this will not be possible.

I am planning to invite all my friends.
We want to welcome everyone to come to the Alberta Provincial Championship.

Jacek and other riders  :D

PS.
No insurance and registration required.

That terrain is absolutely awesome.  I've had the pleasure of riding there once last year and I can honestly say its some of the best natural terrain for Trials.  Looking good guys!

Hi to all trials entusiasts:
A little bit of an update on the Alberta Provincial Championship.

First of all, I would like to thank the administrators for putting all 4 rounds on our calendar.

We have secured free parking for all participants and spectators from our generous land owner Jim Bower. Thank you very very much. Unfortunately, due to a logistics nightmare, we were unable to secure the camping area. However, in Red Deer we have few campgrounds which are in close proximity to the staging area.
1. Lion's Campground on riverside street close to Hwy 11
2. Westerner Campground on 19th street/ Hwy 595
 and my favourite one
3. Riverview campground near Jofree bridge on Hwy 11 (my favourite one)
Another option for trailers owners is WallMart parking lot...less classy though but effective

In reality this means that we can stay on the site from roughly  8 am till around 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. A portable toilet will be available too (just one - due to budgets cut- (Mitch's salary will cost us  $750.000 dollars.) We can not afford another toilet.
After consultation with Steve and other riders we decided to do five classes:
Novices
Intermediate
Advance
Senior Advance 45+ (they will ride intermediates lines)
Experts

For each class winners at the end of Round four (generosity of James Kalen from Precision Prosthetic, Red Deer) will receive for first place a very nice prize (this will remain a secret for the moment .) For each individual who signs up for a event James sponsored  an additional T-shirt with a great logo.
Second Gear Club will provide very nice plugs from places 1-5 with with a logo of Alberta Provincial Championship and additional stickers for each day.

We are working very closely with Steve Foord (Second Gear Club) to make  great competitions. I am awaiting for addresses from each land owner to be able to secure insurance through WTC. I will send a request ASAP.

In addition we will use a new marking system, mostly used at World Rounds, with directional arrows and survey flags. We are hoping that this system will be cost efficient for the long run, less time consuming and environmentally friendly.

At the end but not last, I would like to thank all riders for supporting our effort to make Trials more spectacular and exacting by helping us setting up, giving us ideas and sponsoring. Thank you very much to all who were helping us set up course…job is not done yet but we appreciate your help very, very  much.

Trials Ridders

This is a final touch before competition, I and Rod have spent about 3 hrs cleaning top part of the stream. These are gorgeous sections- tight but nice- especially those sections are challenging for expert riders (I personally have to buy some dippers- I may need it.) Mitch joined us later on and cooled me down with my ideas for intermediate riders. I am glad to work with those guys. Mitch made some valuable opinion and we as a team acceppted his point of view. This was a good team work  for sure. At the end of the day we want people to be happy- not always working this way- sorry!
You can see some new flagging idea- thanks to Ian and Mitch I was able to make some pins for new arrows. This way we are hopping to minimize confusion with path for all classes. By the way for your personal information,  Mitch is renting toilet for us- well with his salary $750.000 it should not be a problem- don't you thinks so..... but he wants his money back later on- dammit, I was hopping to go to Las Vegas.
Please join us for a fun ride on October 5-6. Detail information in previous post
Thank you for supporting Observe Trials and WTC (World Trials Canada)

Believed it or not, but his is a steep section ("The dippers' challenge")

Had a great day out last saturday setting up sections for oct 5 and 6 trial. Looking forward to riding and not using the machette.. What an amazing trials area this is with lots of rocky creek, steep climbs and logs to challange everyone. The 3 sections we worked on last weekend are all within less than a 5 minute walk from the parking area and will be great for spectators (the expert lines are freaky! ). The loop alone is a great ride and view of the river valley.

We had a chance to setup some sections for October event today. Big thank you for all involved in preparation today (Ken, Mitch, Kelsey)  We had a chance to flagged and marked  three sections on the top,  4 sections at the end of the loop, plus 2 sections  in the middle. (All sections are hidden from the usual hiker's traffic- hopefully no one will destroy them over the week.
Rod, section we cleaned last week are  looking really, really good- you will be happy from the outcome.
Thank you for involvement guys!!!!!!!! :)
PS
At the end of the loop we found another breathtaking view onto river valley.

 8) Hello Jacek, I have a couple of questions;

- is this trial area spectator friendly to view all sections? For Family and friends, and Rob Healy
- where are people planning on camping/staying?

Title: Re: 2013 Alberta Trial Championship, October 5,6 & 19,20

Almost all sections are accessible for spectators- 2-15 minutes hike and you can see sections 1-9 for intermediate, advance, advance 45+ and expert, first section for novice is 30 seconds from staging area.  Parking is free for the day to all. Unfortunately, no overnight camping is allowed- alternative for overnight staying are campgrounds  Lion's, Westerner or River-view (10-15 minutes  away by car - Positive aspect of this : they are safe  and have showers with restrooms. Please see one of my post above for more information (phone directions website for those places).
I hope that our Alberta weather will cooperate too.
Jacek
PS
Airdrie event will allow for camping.

It seems that our weather will be fantastic for our event. Tomorrow will be the last day of preparation, Marris is planning to help, Roger G. and Mitch.  Tara, Rogers' G. wife and Brett even-though that he is injured,  offered help the day after tomorrow with registration and logistics. Thank you to all for commitments and help.
I am positively surprise how many people want this competition to succeed. I am very grateful for this. Thank you guys for supporting Alberta Observe Trials and idea of bringing people together.
James K. will not only look after awards but he also offered to bring some warm coffee and donuts perhaps on Saturday to warm us up?
See you tomorrow and obviously on Saturday and Sunday.  Drive safely.

JJ

Excellent trial Jacek and all others who helped.  The sections looked amazing and I'm very disappointed I wasn't able to ride this one!  It was great to spectate though!

Pooped out but happy. Never done a 2 day trial before. Seems like a good idea considering all the work to put on a trial, may as well make it 2 days. Weather was great, couldnt have been better. Terrain was awesome and the comraderie was great (kind of what attracted us to trials in the 1st place). Thanks to everyone who had a part in this and especially Jacek who took it by the horns and made it happen. Need to learn an accent of some sort as all the experts seem to have one except Ben who represented himself very well without haha. Overall great experience, was great to see the experts working each other over and everybody was there for the right reason- to ride bikes. Graylin said he was ready for another day of riding just before he almost fell asleep at supper. Thanks again. Cant wait for rounds 3-4 in Airdrie!!

Dear Riders:
I am happy to announce that:
We have reached our objectives:
we have fun
brought more experts (great learning opportunities)
recruited three completely new riders  (one girl and two guys)
we have raised money
we compete with bunch of new people
we met another 2 riders from Red Deer which are interested in Trials one has beta other gas gas
we had random spectators and show them what is trial about
gain experience (new marking was good idea- (thanks to Ian & Mitch)
What we could do better?- attract more ridders perhaps? (21 on day one and 22 on day two- not bad at all) On the other hand,  quality was superb. Thank you to all for participating.  Big thanks to our generous:
Land owner Jim Bower
Sponsor James Kallen from Precision Prosthetics of Red Deer
WTC (World Traill Canada) for sanctioning and insurance for land owner
spectators and
ALL RIDERS
It was a pleasure to work with all volunteers that played a HUGE part of Alberta Trials Championship Round 1-2 Red Deer.
(Mitch, Kelsey, Rod & Kii, James & Zak, Roger and Tara plus kids, Brett & Jennifer, Ken, Marris, Mark, Chris, Steve, Ian and many more which I can not remember.
We have raised total of $ 1468, 5 (minus $130 for toilet- you should see happy Mitch's face when I gave him, his money back. I tried my best to bargain for a best price for us- I complain abut colour (bright orange), placement (too close to trees) and even smell.(someone made an early deposit before I did it)  Unfortunately, non of my brilliant arguments worked-sorry guys, I have to pay) which gives us amount of
$ 1338, 5.  ($ 1160 ($1290-$ 130) by riders and $ 178. 5 by spectator.

As a group, we decided at the end of the event that we would like Mr Jim Bower to decide which organization he would like us donate money to (apparently Flood Victims has been well supported by government, "similar" to Mitch) Jim Bower proposed to donate money to Children Psychiatric Unit 39 in Red Deer- according to him, those small patients has a lot of needs (those little ones have been victims of violence, bullying, sexual abuse, suicidal and so on…) To be able to function with new programs they needs some help.  I personally think that this is a Nobel idea.
I will donate our collected money on behalf of Alberta United  Trials Riders and Jim Bower tomorrow morning in Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Thank you to all for great help and participation- without all of you this kind of event would not have any sense what so ever. You have made this unique and unforgettable experience.

I will try to post results tomorrow
Pictures took by Tara, Jenniffer and Brett will follow in few days
Please come to Round 3-4 Airdrie on October 19-20
Thank You
"La Fidel Castro"

Congratulations Jacek (aka, Mr. Christmas Tree) on a successful weekend, that was a great time, great location, great layout, very good sections. I really liked the length of the sections, you were able to stretch them out, with a lot of variety, challenging natural obstacles.  My only hope, we will return to that area.

Cheers

I really enjoyed the weekend and the terrain was stellar.  I'm more than a little 'conflicted' about the next trial in Airdrie as I'm booked with friends to be riding in Kelowna.  I guess I'll just need to look forward to next year!

Thanks to all the folks who helped set up the trial, it was a great success from my point of view.

Cheers,
Aaron

I can't wait till next year this time...When we do the 2nd Annual Alberta Championship!!!!
IMO...Both events were a great success. Organized well, and the choosen areas/land were great.  I really enjoyed it.
The one thing I'd like to say, I liked how Airdrie wrapped up by 1:30pm. This enable me to get back up home by 9pm.  I don't even know what time Red Deer wrapped up, as I DNF'd on the Sunday, I left the site at about 4pm.
Congrats to those who stood upon the podiums, the organizers/designers put us into some very challenging sections.

Hi Folks

I caught the tail end of the Airdrie trial on Sunday and it looked fun, I must say I was envious of those that were riding. I haven't had a trials bike since the summer and am currently waiting (im)patiently (just ask Dave Rhodes) for a new Beta to arrive. I hope to join y'all next year at a few of the events.

Till then

Garrett
